On this 250th Independence Day, let us keep first things first. Our most essential rights come from God, and it is the proper role of government to protect these natural rights of the people. The struggle between good and evil is real. As is the struggle between liberty and tyranny. People of faith understand that an appeal to heaven is always available in the cause of justice. At the time of the American Revolution, the British king wielded the mightiest military power of any nation on Earth. When the repeated appeals for justice made to the king by our founders failed, they resisted the king, and appealed to heaven. We have cause for both celebration and continuing appeal to heaven. Increasingly, I instruct on the importance of gratitude in leadership and in life. We abound in blessings. And even in a politically-divided America, just being able to live in this nation is to be blessed. Even for the nation’s most vocal critics, they cannot deny that America remains the world’s most-desired destination location. As this Memorial Day and weekend comes to an end, I hope to spark within each of us a desire to embrace gratitude and an understanding that there is more to this day than the approach of another summer. Secondly, I hope to encourage us all to do more than just remember. As a culture, those of us blessed to be living in the United States of America are in the midst of our most intense giving season of the year. Annually, the holiday season from Thanksgiving through the end of the year brings amazing levels of charitable giving. According to a nonprofit marketing resource, 30% of all annual charitable giving occurs in the month of December. Additionally, each Christmas, traditional gift giving is significant. From 1992–2024, Americans spent 19% more in December than the next highest month (November). Holiday gift buying was a key factor. Two hundred and forty-eight years have passed since the 4th of July in 1776. I love America. The principles on which this country was created still guide me. The courage of our founders and their commitment to those core principles still inspire me. They were flawed people, who were determined to secure the blessings of liberty for themselves and those who would come after them. The work of securing those liberties continues until this very day. Our nation’s military personnel defend our nation from threats abroad. America’s police officers secure those blessings within communities across this nation. Hyper-secularism has fed an age of narcissism, and narcissists are incapable of true gratitude. On this Thanksgiving Day 2023, I pray for them and our United States of America. Even in a nation suffering the consequences of political divisions, we remain a blessed people. Yet, in an age of narcissism, far too many Americans would rather condemn privilege than even acknowledge, let alone be thankful for their own blessings.
